National Librarians’ Day Celebrations held at ICFAI University Nagaland

The Department of Library & Information Science, ICFAI University Nagaland commemorates the National Librarian’s Day along with the rest of the country. August 12th is celebrated as National Librarian’s Day in India, to commemorate Dr S. R. Ranganathan a Padmashri, who is the father of library science, documentation & information science in India and is widely known across the world for his fundamental thinking in the field.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rupanka Bhuyan, Registrar, ICFAI University highlighted how the University Library ‘NJY Memorial Library’ has developed from its inception till today, serving the academic community to the best of its ability. He asserted that a library is pivotal for the institution building of any organisation, especially in an academic environment.

The guest speaker, Mr. Amos P., Librarian, Livingstone Foundation International College delivered a talk on ‘Status and role of a librarian in nation building’. He discussed the role of librarians in society and encouraged upcoming young professionals to dedicate themselves to serving the users diligently by providing the right information to the users at the right time, which is very important for societal development. He briefed on the status of library professionals’ jobs, which is given a respectable status by UGC and the central government, including the strongholds of Library Associations at the national level, which is in contravene with the present scenario in organisations in Northeast including the general public’s attitude towards the profession. He urged the library professionals to rise to the occasion to assert their role, spread awareness about the significance of the library profession within or beyond an organisation and to learn new skills in information communication technologies. Professionals have to remain abreast with emerging trends of societal demands as users transits towards digital scholarships and digital communication.
